After a short drive to Umbwe Gate (1,640m/5,380’), registration is completed before beginning the trek through dense rainforests. The path is steep, winding through lush vegetation with towering trees and thick undergrowth. Keep an eye out for black-and-white colobus monkeys swinging through the canopy. After a demanding ascent, you reach Umbwe Camp (2,850m/9,350’), your first overnight stop.
